On the Blog: This One Technique Can Reduce the Risk of Tearing: Perineal Massage Explained
Want to do something that actually reduces your risk of tearing during birth? Perineal massage is one of the most effective—and underused—techniques.
How It Works
Softens and stretches the perineal tissues
Increases blood flow and body awareness
Helps reduce fear and tension during crowning (babies head coming out)
Evidence Speaks
Research shows regular perineal massage from 32-35 weeks onwards can significantly reduce the risk of perineal trauma in first-time births.
When is it especially beneficial?
If you are at higher risk of tears (think over 30 or 35 years old at your first birth, or of asian descent, or your baby is expected to be larger with a bigger head) then you may want to start at 32 weeks and get expert advice to ensure you are doing it correctly.
