On the Blog: Tiny Pulses, Big Impact: How a TENS Machine Can Help You Labour Smarter

What if a little device could help you feel more in control during early labour? A TENS machine is a powerful (yet gentle) physio-approved tool that many women don’t realise can help reduce pain and pelvic floor tension.

What is a TENS Machine?

  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation sends small pulses through pads on your back.

  • It helps block pain signals and stimulate natural endorphin release.

  • Reduces reliance on medical pain relief in early labour.

Why It Helps Your Pelvic Floor
By reducing pain and anxiety, your pelvic floor muscles are less likely to tense or brace, which supports more effective contractions and less trauma.

Studies have shown that a TENS machine will reduce your pain levels by 2-3 points. That means for example if your pain is a 5/10, it will go down to a 2-3/10. This can significantly help to manage pain during labour.

TENS Machines

There are lots of options, but my most recently loved option is the one from The Birth Sling. It is a cordless TENS meaning it won’t get in the way of any of your birth positions! Remember not to use it in water.
